3 - Research data planning and management DRCD - Doctoral Researchers Core Development

Overview

Before starting to collect/create data during a research project, it is important to have a data management plan (DMP) in place, as good preparation ensures you will manage your data most efficiently. Doctoral students are required to create a DMP and most research councils require a DMP to be submitted with grant proposals; Cranfield University policy requests that all research projects use a DMP.
This session introduces DMPs then talks through how to get started on DMPonline, the free online software used here for writing DMPs. The required content for a DMP is recapped briefly and there is time for discussions and questions on the software or content.

Who should participate
Doctoral students should attend this course before starting to collect/create data.

Intended learning outcomes (ILOs)
After attending the session attendees will be able to:

  • explain what a data management plan is;
  • summarise why a DMP is important;
  • list data management elements to consider when writing a DMP;
  • find further help and support.

Important information
You MUST bring your laptop or other device like a tablet as you will be setting up access to the data management system.

It would be helpful if you had attended Research Data Management 1: Introduction previously. However, this is not a prerequisite.
You can also complete the prerequisite by doing the relevant blocks of the online RDM module. If you are unable to log in to this Canvas module, email researchdata@cranfield.ac.uk to request access.

Mapping to RDF
The above ILOs map onto Vitae RDF sub-domains:

  • C1 – Professional Conduct,
  • D2 – Communication & Dissemination.

Booking information
This course normally runs three times per year, see the Researcher Development calendar in Outlook
No charges apply for late cancellations and non-attendance of this workshop.
