Workshop overview

There are 8 sessions in this suite of Lunchtime learning workshops each lasting 45 minutes. Academic writing topics you that will need to succeed:

1. How to successfully paraphrase, summarise and synthesise sources
2. Ten things you need to know about referencing at Cranfield
3. How to write a critical analysis
4. Six ways to achieve cohesion
5. The four main sentence types in academic writing
6. How to write concisely 
7. Punctuation: the four uses of the comma
8. Use of tenses in academic writing 

Aim

The aim of these sessions is to cover some of the most important aspects of academic writing in concise, bitesize and easy to comprehend sessions.

The sessions are designed to be standalone. Each session is offered as a face-to-face workshop or an online webinar. You do not need to attend both. Webinar joining instructions are normally sent a few days in advance of the session.

Who should participate?
All students who want to revise their knowledge and improve their academic writing ability.

Intended learning outcomes (ILOs)

By the end of these sessions, participants should be able to:

  • paraphrase, summarise and synthesise sources successfully;
  • cite and reference sources accurately according to the Cranfield referencing style;
  • think and write critically;
  • write in a coherent and cohesive manner;
  • construct different sentences in your writing appropriately;
  • write concisely;
  • perfect the usage of the comma, the most common punctuation mark;
  • and apply tenses effectively.

Session format
Interactive workshop with PowerPoint presentation and group and individual exercises.
