Workshop overview  

Most MSc students at Cranfield will complete an Individual Research Project (IRP) in which they undertake original research in a relevant industrial or research area and write a thesis following the standard IMRAD-model (Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion).

This aim of this support course is to provide students a practical starting point to the writing of their thesis by exploring the requirements and key linguistic & structural considerations of each main chapter. This course is divided into five sessions: (1) Introduction (2) Literature Review (3) Method (4) Results & Discussion (5) Conclusion & Abstract.

Who should participate  

MSc students preparing to write a research-based thesis. 

Intended learning outcomes (ILOs)

By the end of this course, participants should be able to: 

  • recognise standard components and structure of a thesis
  • evaluate effectiveness of examples 
  • identify and apply common linguistic features
