Writing skills 1: Applying academic language style Online

Online workshop. Academic English is no-one’s first language. It is a language that takes time to learn and develop. The aim of this suite of workshops is to revise key skills and topics related to academic writing that you will need to succeed.

There are 10 sessions in this suite of workshops. 

  • Applying academic language style
  • Sentence structure and flow
  • Paragraph structure and flow
  • Structuring text logically
  • Applying the three key tenses in academic writing  
  • Tips and strategies for revising your writing
  • How to paraphrase, summarize, and synthesize sources
  • How to integrate citations in-text
  • How to critically engage with sources
  • How to read journal articles.

The workshops are offered as face-to-face sessions or as online webinars. You do not need to attend both. Webinar joining instructions are normally uploaded directly to your Outlook calendar on acceptance of a place.

Workshop overview

This is an online workshop. Join us to revise what is meant by academic style and how you can achieve it in your writing. 

Who should participate?

All students who want to revise their knowledge and improve their ability to write academic text.

Intended learning outcomes (ILOs)

By the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Articulate key features of academic style.
  • Identify and correct common academic style errors using the techniques studied.

Interactive workshop with PowerPoint presentation and small group exercises.

This session will be repeated at various times during the academic year. In accordance with our standard booking conditions, charges apply for late cancellations and non-attendance at all or part of a face-to-face workshop but not for a webinar.
